As a Shift Supervisor at Panera Bread, Dylan Bednarz is responsible for leading a team of more than sixty Associates, while also handling the day-to-day operations of the café. This role has also allowed him to come into contact with other managers and he has noticed that the people who are most successful in such positions all possess the following qualities.
Strong Communication Skills
If you are unable to communicate clearly and concisely, you are going to struggle in any management position. Whether it is talking to your team members about their roles and what is expected of them or delivering reports to senior management, you need to be able to put your point across and appear confident while doing so.
Creativity
As a manager you should be constantly looking at aspects of the business that need to be improved and, more importantly, what you and your team can do to make those improvements. This takes a certain amount of creativity and will often require you to think about how current techniques and procedures can be changed in order to make your team as effective as possible.
A Human Side
While it is vital that any manager maintains an air of authority so that they are capable of providing orders to their team members, Dylan Bednarz notes that having a human side will also allow you to connect with your team. By allowing employees to put a face to their management, you will be able to motivate them to perform better in their roles in addition to ensuring their growth as professionals.
